Jackson Hole Summer Activities: How to Beat the Heat

Baby, it's hot outside. As temperatures across the country continue to climb, it's time to find a summer getaway that doesn't involve turning into a pile of ooze on the sidewalk. That's why you’re in luck here in Jackson Hole—between alpine lakes, shady forests, scenic rivers, and crisp mountain mornings, we're overflowing with heat-resistant summer itinerary ideas.

Cool Off on the Snake River

If there’s one activity that belongs on every summer itinerary, it’s floating the Snake River. A scenic float trip through Grand Teton National Park offers incredible views of the Tetons, bald eagles, moose, and maybe even an otter if you brought your lucky binoculars. But if your middle name is "danger" rather than "peaceful scenery" (both are weird, but we don't judge), book a whitewater rafting trip through Snake River Canyon instead. Find out about floating opportunities through Grand Teton National Park here.

Pro tip: Morning float trips are usually cooler and often have the best wildlife viewing.

Spend the Day at Jenny Lake

Few places scream “Wyoming summer” quite like Jenny Lake. The crystal-clear water stays refreshingly cold, and the surrounding trails offer plenty of shade. Take the Jenny Lake Shuttle Boat across the lake (schedule here), then hike to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point for one of the park’s most iconic views. If you’re feeling ambitious (and you're not chafing too badly yet), continue into Cascade Canyon, where cooler temperatures and alpine scenery make the extra effort worthwhile. (Find out more here.)

Pro tip: arrive before 8 a.m. to get a parking spot. Otherwise, you’ll become intimately familiar with the phrase “Parking Full.”

Paddle at String Lake

If you’re traveling with kids, head to String Lake. Its shallow shoreline warms up just enough for wading while still offering a refreshing escape from the afternoon heat. It’s also one of the best spots in Grand Teton National Park for paddleboarding or kayaking. Rentals are available in Jackson if you didn't lug your own own gear all the way out here. (Read all about Jackson Hole water sports here.)

Bonus: The Teton reflections here are ridiculously photogenic.

Grab Something Cold in Downtown Jackson

After a morning outdoors, head into downtown Jackson for lunch and a frozen treat or three. Take a stroll through Town Square, browse the local shops, and cool off with an ice cream cone (check out the delicious options here) before snapping the obligatory photo under the famous antler arches. (Read all about those right here.) Nobody gets out of Jackson without taking that picture. If you try, we will hunt you down and make you take one. Maybe.

Stay Close to the Adventure

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Flat Creek Inn is the location. We’re just minutes from the entrance to Grand Teton National Park, making it easy to get an early start before the crowds—and the heat—arrive. Plus, we have air conditioning.
