Discover Jackson’s Roots: A Visit to the Jackson Hole History Museum

Jackson Hole History Museum

Just a few blocks from the center of town—and not far from your cozy room at Flat Creek Inn, as it just so happens—lies one of Jackson’s most meaningful experiences: the Jackson Hole History Museum. Recently reopened in June 2024 after a major renovation and rebranding effort, the museum is now better than ever at bringing the past to life. Whether you’re super into really old spoons or just want a break from the heat, it’s a great place to spend a quiet hour or so traveling back in time.

What You’ll Find Inside the Jackson Hole History Museum

Main Gallery

This modern, well-curated space walks you through over 11,000 years of human history in the Jackson Hole area. Artifacts, videos, interactive kiosks, and even pull-out drawers filled with touchable objects tell the story of the valley’s many voices. Contributions from local historians, authors, and organizations give the exhibit an authentic, community-centered feel.

Photo Wall

Imagine standing in front of life-size historic photographs from a collection of nearly 20,000 images. With just a tap on the interactive kiosk, you can learn more about the people and stories behind the snapshots.

Artifact Wall

What’s the story behind that well-worn branding iron or extremely soft-looking fur coat? This wall invites curiosity with everyday and unexpected objects from the museum’s 7,200-piece collection, which you can learn about with a tap on the kiosk.

The Classroom

Because, try as you might, not all kids want to spend an hour learning a history lesson, there’s also the Classroom, where you can find lots of great educational books and activities. Our kids ran straight here.

Shane Saddle & Tack Cabin

Step into the cinematic past with a walk through one of the log structures built for Shane, the iconic 1950s Western filmed right here in Jackson Hole. It’s a highlight for both film aficionados and people who are just really into old wooden structures.

Cissy Patterson Gallery

Located upstairs, this gallery hosts rotating, community-curated exhibits. Currently on view is Women Artists of the American West: Trailblazers at the Turn of the 20th Century. Exhibits change regularly, so be sure to check the museum’s website or sign up for their newsletter to stay updated.

Explore Jackson on Foot

The museum also offers walking tours that turn the streets of downtown Jackson into an open-air classroom:
