Winter is coming. But this isn't Game of Thrones, so here the season comes with pretty reliable opening dates.
Jackson Hole Ski Resort Opening Dates
Grand Targhee Resort is scheduled to kick things off on November 20, 2026, conditions permitting. Its 2026–27 season is currently scheduled to run through April 18, 2027.
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort follows one week later, with opening day scheduled for November 27.
Snow King Mountain, located right in the town of Jackson, just announced an opening day of December 4.
Of course, opening dates always come with a Wyoming-sized asterisk. (Not a Wyoming-shaped asterisk, mind you, because that would be a rectangle.) Snowfall and mountain conditions can change operations. Check conditions before you go.
What Happens Before the Lifts Start Running?
November is the month of Jackson Hole's identity crisis. The mountains may look thoroughly wintry while conditions in the valley bounce between bare ground and fresh snow. Some days feel like late fall. Others make it very clear that winter has arrived without asking anyone’s permission. Grand Teton National Park also begins its winter transition during this time. As of November 1, Teton Park Road is closed to vehicles between the Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge. Before deep snow accumulates, visitors can walk or bike the closed road. Once enough snow arrives, the corridor becomes a favorite for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Winter grooming on Teton Park Road typically begins around mid-December, depending on snow conditions.
Yellowstone’s Snow Season Starts in December
Winter in Yellowstone is an entirely different experience: deep snow, steaming thermal features, wildlife, and considerably fewer traffic jams. Most park roads, including the South Entrance (used by travelers coming from Jackson Hole), are closed to regular vehicles beginning November 1. The park’s winter season is scheduled to begin December 15, when groomed roads open to commercial snowcoaches and authorized snowmobiles, conditions permitting.
Okay, But When Does Jackson Hole Really Feel Like Winter?
Wow, that's a toughy. There isn’t one magic date. By late November, Grand Targhee and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort are scheduled to be operating. By mid-December, more winter activities generally come online, and the valley settles into its full winter rhythm. Then come the holidays, and nobody has to ask whether snow season has started anymore.
