How to Spend a Perfect Fall Weekend in Jackson Hole

Here’s a secret: there’s no bad time to visit Jackson Hole. No matter when you go, there’s a lot to see and do. Take fall, for example. We’ve written several posts about activities to do in the fall before, but guess what—there’s always more. With that in mind, here’s how we might spend a great weekend here in Jackson.

Day 1: Arrive and Unwind

Start your fall weekend in Jackson Hole by settling into your cozy room at Flat Creek Inn. (Yes, we had to start there.) Located just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Jackson, we provide a peaceful retreat while still being close to all the action. After checking in, cross the street to take a leisurely stroll near the elk refuge.

For dinner, head into town and enjoy a meal at one of Jackson’s charming local restaurants. Try seasonal dishes made with fresh ingredients, like a hearty bowl of butternut squash soup or a bison burger. Here’s a list we compiled a while back of our favorite restaurants in every category.

Day 2: Explore Grand Teton National Park

If coffee’s your thing, start your morning with a cup of coffee from the Cowboy Coffee Co., then gear up for a day of adventure in Grand Teton National Park. Fall is one of the top four times of the year to visit the park (it’s tied with summer, winter, and spring, actually), with its vibrant foliage and cooler temperatures making outdoor exploration more enjoyable.

A must-do hike is Taggart Lake, a moderate trail that offers stunning views of the Teton range and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fall colors. If you like your nature without the exercise, the Jenny Lake Scenic Drive is also a great way to soak in the landscape.

After your hike, take a wildlife tour. Autumn is the prime time to spot animals like elk, moose, and bison. Find out how and where right here

For dinner, treat yourself to another great restaurant on the list above. Or two. Or three.

Day 3: Scenic Drives and Arts in Town

On your final day, take a scenic drive along Moose-Wilson Road, one of the most picturesque routes in the area. The fall foliage, paired with views of the Snake River and Teton peaks, makes it a photographer’s dream; it’s also pretty great for anyone with eyeballs and is a great place for more wildlife sightings, especially early in the morning.

Afterward, head back into Jackson and spend some time exploring the local art galleries and boutiques. At the time we’re posting, the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival is in full swing (till September 15), offering a wonderful opportunity to browse and purchase works from local artists.
