Everyone knows Jackson Hole has its fair share of stunning landscapes and outdoor adventures, but when the sun’s hammering down on you, sometimes you just want to get inside and grab a popsicle. Or maybe even find a nice body of water somewhere and throw yourself in. So whether you're a local or a visitor, here are some of the best places in Jackson Hole to beat the heat.

1. Phelps Lake

Phelps Lake is a perfect spot to cool off with a refreshing swim. The lake's clear waters are surrounded by stunning mountain views, making it a serene escape from the summer heat. There are several trails leading to the lake, so you can pair a scenic hike with a cool dip. Or if you prefer, you can launch yourself off a 30-foot boulder, knock yourself out. Except don’t actually get knocked out, because that sounds pretty dangerous. Jokes aside, please exercise caution when jumping into the water, and please follow proper hiking safety techniques on the way.

2. Aerial Tram

For a high-altitude adventure, take a ride on the Aerial Tram, which ascends 4,139 vertical feet, offering breathtaking views and cooler temperatures at the summit. Once at the top, you can enjoy a leisurely hike or relax at Corbet’s Cabin with a famous waffle and some refreshing mountain air. We’ve been writing about those waffles for years now, and one of these days we will sample that legendary taste.

3. Granite Hot Springs

Nestled in the Gros Ventre mountains, Granite Hot Springs offers a unique way to escape the heat. The hot springs' naturally heated waters are warm, but the surrounding mountain air can be refreshingly cool, especially in the evenings. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing soak surrounded by nature. A fee is required to enter.

4. Moo’s Gourmet Ice Cream

Where can you go to sample what the Food Network voted the best ice cream in Wyoming? Moo’s, of course—and the ice cream flavor in question is Wild Huckleberry. Or try some of their dozens of other flavors, including a handful of flavors you probably shouldn’t share with your kids.

5. National Museum of Wildlife Art

The only thing better than nature on a hot day is indoor representations of nature. Visit the National Museum of Wildlife Art, home to an impressive collection of wildlife art from artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Andy Warhol, John James Audubon, and more. It's a great place to spend a few hours exploring exhibits and enjoying the air-conditioned comfort.

6. Jenny Lake

Jenny Lake offers opportunities for swimming, boating, and picnicking. The lake's clear, cool waters are perfect for a refreshing dip, and the surrounding trails provide shaded paths. You can get there via several different hikes; take a look and find one that fits your skill level and preferences.

7. The Boardwalk

Starting with the town square as a home base, stroll through Jackson’s streets, stopping in any of the charming stores that capture your interest. Teton Toys is great for toys, while Teton Mountaineering is another particular favorite of ours if you’re looking for outdoor gear. And if it’s souvenirs you’re looking for, you can hardly throw a stone without hitting one of Jackson Hole’s many fine gift shops. (Again, don’t actually do it. Throwing stones hurts.)
