Our Favorite Hot Chocolate Recipes

There’s something about winter in Jackson Hole that just begs for hot chocolate. Maybe it’s the way the mountains look like they’ve been dusted with powdered sugar. Or maybe it’s the fact that ... I dunno, it's cold outside? Either way, here at Flat Creek Inn, we consider hot chocolate a necessity in the winter, and sometimes you might catch us sneaking some in the fall and spring, too.
So in the spirit of warming up fingers, toes, and general morale, here are a few of our favorite hot chocolate recipes. They’re simple, cozy, and perfect for sipping in any cold-related situation.
Classic Creekside Hot Chocolate
This classic is still undefeated. Heat whole milk (or whatever milk you prefer), whisk in high-quality cocoa powder, a spoonful of sugar, and a pinch of salt. Add a splash of vanilla at the end. Drink immediately while pretending you’re in a Hallmark movie, minus the hot single dad from high school you're reconnecting with after you leave your big-time law job in New York.
Jackson Hole Peppermint Snowstorm
For when winter needs to taste even more like winter. Make your usual hot chocolate (Swiss Miss is fine, we won't judge), then stir in crushed peppermint candy or a few drops of peppermint extract. Top with whipped cream.
Huckleberry Dream Hot Chocolate
Because if the Tetons had an official berry, it would be this one. (We did a blog about it a while back.) Warm your hot chocolate as usual, then stir in a spoonful of huckleberry syrup or jam. The result is a fruity, almost magical mix that tastes like summer and winter decided to go golfing together. Top with whipped cream if you’re feeling whimsical, which you absolutely should be.
Campfire Cinnamon Hot Chocolate
Ideal for anyone who likes to pretend they’re outdoorsy but also enjoys the wonders of central heating. Add a half-teaspoon of cinnamon to your hot chocolate while it simmers. If you’re feeling bold, sprinkle a tiny bit of cayenne. Not enough to scare you, of course. Just enough to remind you you’re alive.
Peanut Butter Cup Hot Chocolate
It sounds excessive because it is. After all, chocolate isn't generally meant to be enjoyed in responsible amounts, anyway. (If it were, it'd be granola.) Stir in a spoonful of peanut butter until it melts into the cocoa. Garnish with mini marshmallows or, if it’s been that kind of day, an actual peanut butter cup.
And there you have it: winter happiness in mug-form. If you try any of these recipes while staying with us at Flat Creek Inn, feel free to enjoy your hot chocolate by the window.
