A Day at Flat Creek Inn

Let’s say you’ve just rolled into Jackson Hole. Maybe you’re fresh off a long road trip through Wyoming’s wide open spaces. Maybe your flight just landed and you’re trying to remember how to function at altitude. Either way, welcome to Flat Creek Inn—your unofficial headquarters for wildlife watching, outdoor adventuring, or just doing nothing somewhere pretty.

Here’s what a day at Flat Creek Inn could look like. No pressure. No firm itinerary. Just you, the Tetons, and the conflicting urges to feel like an outdoorsy person but also feel warm and cozy.

7:00 AM – Sunrise + Elk Refuge Wake-Up Call

If you’re staying in a front-facing room (pro tip: they’re all front-facing), you’ll wake up to the golden light spilling across the National Elk Refuge. Sometimes the elk are just hanging out. Sometimes they’re dramatically wandering in slow motion like it’s a wildlife documentary. Either way, it beats waking up to traffic or the people from Room 227 having a cannonball competition in the pool. (We don’t even have a pool, so you’re safe there.)

7:45 AM – Coffee and Contemplation

You shuffle over to the main office for complimentary coffee or hot chocolate. It’s hot, it’s strong, and it tastes even better when you’re watching steam rise off the snow or the creek. You might even spot a fox trotting by like it owns the place. (Tell the fox it’s welcome to think that if it’s willing to pay property taxes.)

8:30 AM – Breakfast Burrito from the C-Store

Hit up the on-site convenience store. It’s got breakfast sandwiches, snacks, drinks, and so forth. Ideal for breakfast people and humans in general.

9:30 AM – Decide to Be Outdoorsy

You’re in Jackson Hole. At some point, you’ll feel mildly guilty if you don’t at least pretend to be into nature. Whether it’s a scenic drive through Grand Teton National Park, a quick hike up Snow King, or just a walk along Flat Creek, it’s easy to feel rugged without going full-on mountain goat.

12:00 PM – Lunch in Town (3 Minutes Away)

Head into downtown Jackson, less than a five-minute drive. Hit up a local burger joint or grab a pastry at a place like Persephone’s Bakery. Pro tip: park once and walk—downtown is small but mighty.

1:30 PM – Browse the Shops, Pretend You’re Buying a Cowboy Hat

You don’t have to actually buy that belt buckle, but it’s fun to pretend you’re the kind of person who would. Hit the art galleries, souvenir shops, and maybe grab a scoop of huckleberry ice cream just to say you did. And also because it’s delicious.

3:00 PM – Back to the Inn for a Power Chill

This is the underrated part of the day: the mid-afternoon rest. You’ve earned it. Throw open the curtains, sink into your bed, and watch the light shift over the refuge. Maybe nap. Maybe read. Maybe read about napping. The world is your burrito. (And speaking of burritos, feel few to grab another one at the Flat Creek Inn C-store.)

5:30 PM – Dinner Options: Casual or Cowboy

Depending on your mood (and budget), head back into town for dinner. You can go low-key with pizza or go full “Yeehaw” at a place like the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.

7:00 PM – Evening Wildlife Viewing

As the sun dips, it’s golden hour magic. You can often see elk, foxes, bald eagles—sometimes even bighorn sheep if you’re lucky. All from the comfort of your parking lot. You don’t even have to put on hiking boots.

8:30 PM – Cozy Up

Grab snacks from the store, change into sweatpants, and settle in. The Wi-Fi works. The beds are comfy. Netflix is calling. You might also start browsing real estate listings and pretending you could live here. (Everyone does it.)

10:00 PM – Starry Night Send-Off

Step outside for one last breath of cold mountain air and a look at the stars. It’s quiet. It’s peaceful. It smells like pine trees and possibility.

11:00 PM – Sleep Like a Rock in a National Park Ad

That bed hits different after a day like this. You’ll fall asleep wondering why you don’t do this more often. And maybe dreaming about elk.
