Fossils of Yellowstone

Fossils are like the undead--they're dead, but they aren't gone. Yellowstone is known for its hydrothermal features, rugged landscape, and high density of wildlife. But that’s not all it has to offer--many fossils have been found in or around Yellowstone, as well as ancient human artifacts.

Petrified Wood

Little known fact: Yellowstone had significant volcanic activity millions of years before the current hotspot rested there. The resulting volcanic debris covered trees, blocking out oxygen from rotting wood, allowing for entire petrified forests within Yellowstone.

Trilobites

It should be noted that little excavation has been done within the park, being a site so abundant with living species making protecting those the top priority. However, there are a few neat finds within the park itself. One is trilobites, tiny crab-like creatures (the region was once submerged in water). Their petrification being aided by their shells, the presence of trilobites has proven useful for geological dating.

How about dinosaurs?

There are quite a few museums with dinosaur fossils in Wyoming, but unfortunately most are at least several hours’ drive from Yellowstone. Here’s a handy list if you end up in the area:

Wyoming Dinosaur Center in Thermopolis

University of Wyoming Geological Museum in Laramie

Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne

Casper College Tate Geological Museum in Casper

Paleon Museum in Glenrock

The last two offer weeklong “digs”, allowing you to get your hands dirty alongside scientists at active excavations. Wyoming may be the least densely-populated state in the United States, but don't sleep on it--there's a lot of undead you might miss.

Growing up, Dillon could see the Grand Teton from his house on a clear day.  His family took him to nearby national parks so often that he took the parks for granted. It took the rigors of life to teach him how good he had it, and he now spends as much time in the mountains as possible.
