Do you long for a glimpse the storied, glory days of the West, when outlaws stalked the rugged frontier and the valiant lawmen brought them down with the help of their trusty six-shooters? On Monday through Saturday, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, you can step through a portal through time Jackson Hole and relive all the action.

The Jackson Hole Shootout has been a Wyoming tradition since 1957. At 6:15 pm on every summer evening (except Sunday, of course, ‘cause it ain’t right to shoot a man on Sunday), spectators on the northeast corner of Jackson’s Town Square can see frontier justice in action. People start gathering around 5:30 and enjoy ice cream and other refreshments. (Historical records suggest ice cream was never a traditional part of a real Old West shootout, but you never know for sure. Historians have been wrong before.) People who want to enjoy a little bloodless spectacle can do so for free, as the shootout has no cost and doesn’t require any reservations.

The shootout is the longest continuously running gunfight in the United States. Over four million people have watched it over the years—and over 5600 sorry outlaws have met their demise on Jackson’s dusty streets. (Somebody should a medal for that.)
